The country of the poet Hans Christian Andersen
By the Danish Poet Benny Andersen
In the past they were hiding
wrote anonymous letters
shouted anonymous heckles
anonymous phone calls
made anonymous attacks
now they are not afraid to show their faces
now they have names and faces
good Danish names
knitted Danish faces
now they have found each other
by letters to the editors
by opinion polls
by radio and television
they are feeling more and more
arguing already
that they are in the majority
still they are not organized
still they don’t march keeping stroke
but the party keeps ready
with open arms
and closed frontiers
A great many things happens
with surprising change
in this century
Fugitives
immigrants
all you with different hair
different noses
different color of the skin
different faiths and customs
This is the land of Hans Christian Andersen
learn from him and get wiser
the national sport is to give somebody what-for
the humor paved by banana skins
in the mirror of the wide of people
victims
as threats
humanity
as un-Danish
Here it is virtue
even for highly-educated people
to pretend you even
can read or count
that few thousands are
hey presto
to be a migration
Ready when somebody says:
- I am a racist, but -
Then you just have
to jump aside
before they throw up about you
Denmark
once occupied by crazy Germans
soon occupied by obsessed Danes
my country inhabited by backs
my country where there frequently
is a great demand for shoes
which are too small
my country with shrunken horizon
mixed with the navel of the World
Denmark
my scowling country
grow up and great
open your eyes
spread your arms
then we will be able to draw ourselves up
belonging to you
Denmark
don’t be smaller than you are
be
fill in your part of the World
do our shame to shame
then we can renew your reputation
